Outback Steakhouse

One of Brazil's most beloved casual dining brands, Outback built its reputation around experience, generosity and indulgence. However, in a rapidly changing market shaped by new consumption habits and increasing competition, maintaining cultural relevance became just as important as maintaining awareness.

THE SIGNAL

Post-pandemic, fast food carved out an aggressive lane built on convenience and price. Casual dining brands like Outback got dragged into a fight they were never built to win. The real risk wasn't losing share, it was losing meaning. Outback's equity had always lived in generosity, ritual and shared indulgence, not in being the cheapest chair at the table.

The brief wasn't "sell more." It was "matter more."

THE BET

Instead of discounting our way back into consideration, we went after the one currency fast food can't touch: culinary credibility. Brazil was mid-obsession with food as craft, and MasterChef sat right at the center of that culture. So we didn't buy a media spot on the show, we wrote ourselves into its plot: the first restaurant brand in the format's history to sponsor MasterChef Brasil, and the first to hand its own menu over to the contestants.

Ten cooks, paired off, were challenged to reinvent Outback's flavor DNA from scratch. The three dishes that survived both the judges and the eliminations didn't stay on a soundstage, they shipped, nationwide, into every Outback in Brazil: Ribs finished in a raspberry barbecue sauce, a jalapeño-mayo crispy shrimp platter, and a Ribs-and-beef croquete stuffed with mozzarella. Real dishes, real menu, real stakes for the people who made them, from the TV to the table.

THE WORK

The winning plates launched as a permanent sharing-menu platform, Outback feat MasterChef Brasil, live in-restaurant and on delivery, with naming, pricing and merchandising all built around one idea: Outback wasn't sponsoring food culture. It was hosting it and letting the country's most obsessive food judges vouch for the results.

THE OUTCOME

R$74 million in incremental revenue — a 28% lift vs. 2019

85% recall / 89% likeability, among the strongest emotional scores in the brand's history

Elevated perceptions of quality, authenticity and culinary credibility across the network

Reinforced Outback's position as one of Brazil's most relevant and distinctive dining brands — without dropping a single price point

THE TAKEAWAY

Relevance isn't won at the discount table. It's won by finding the cultural conversation your category has been disqualified from and earning a legitimate way in. Outback didn't say it took food seriously. It let the country's most demanding food judges say it for them.
